Albatross and the Lorax

The Albatross and the Lorax are both cautionary tales. They share the common fact that they use a certain creature in order to warn people of certain dangers. In the Lorax, the Lorax warns everybody about cutting down the trees because all the creatures will die and go away. Also, the Albatross warns sailors about the dangers of sailing and also if you kill the Albatross you will be cursed. The sailor does not listen to the warning and kills the Albatross. In return, the sailor is cursed but finds comfort when he realizes how beautiful the sea is. A modern day Albatross would be a Bald Eagle because they are not only endangered, but they also are protected by the law. If you intentially kill a Bald Eagle, you can be thrown in jail because it symbolizes the United States.

Ode to Shoes

Shoes are the best

They define how you dress

With every great pair you wear

People must stop and stare

You must stay fly

And look fresh when you walk by

Always going to buy some more

Keep me lookin good to the floor

My ode is to shoes. I used imagery just like the poem we read in glass. I also tried to take words that didnt neccesarily rhyme, but are pronounced closely together and used them in my ode. My ode is to shoes because I like wearing shoes and theyre important to a lot of people.

Last class we wrote a Thoreau about old and experienced vs. young and innocent. This tied into the subject of “lost kids”, Africa kids, and the poetry by Blake that we read. In Blake’s poetry, he explored the lives of the children that were working in factories during the revolution. Conditions were rough, kids worked long hours, got paid very litte, and were packed together into unhealthy environments. This relates nowadays to the kids in Africa that are being abducted in order to serve in the rebel armies. The rebel armies take the kids at night and train them in a brutal manner. It is our job to help aid the African kids and families. I personally think that the struggle in Africa has gotten lost from focus because of gas prices, and the war in the mid east. I beleive if we publicize what is going on in Africa and show how real and bad the situation is over there, more people will be willing to help out.

I missed class last bell and dont really know what we’re specifically supposed to write about so I’m going to summarize the reading. In the song and in the story, the writer is talking about a certain special place where they grew up. Somewhere that is special to them and is beatiful to them through nature. Both also compare the nature to the cities in town. The writers come back to the beautiful places and are able to understand how beautiful they are because they had been living in the cities. This view is especially evident in the second writing. When the writer was growing up in nature all he saw was a pretty view. But after living in the city for so long and coming back, he is able to see how all the parts of nature interact and connect to eachother. This also relates to the topic of nature vs. civilization that we have been talking about during class discussion. The main thesis of the story is that there is a natural beauty to nature that the city cannot provide.

The sun is shining bright today,

Im filled with joy as I walk below it,

I wish everyday would be this way,

I begin to smile a little bit.

I walk down the sidewalk filled with glee,

The birds are singing as I walk by,

The trees are hanging above me

I feels as if I could fly.

Im so glad its nice out

The weather brightens my day

I want to go shout

Hooray!

This day makes me feel so good,

It gives me the happiness that nothing else could.

This poem is talking about how nature can effect people in their everyday lives. For example since in the poem it is nice out, the speaker has very positive feelings. Where as if the day was dark and gloomy the speaker would most likely have more of a pessimistic outlook on life. Nature and the environment plays a substantial role in a persons mental state of mind.

Industrial Revolution

The situations during the Industrial Revolution and our economics today are very similiar. The first and most obvious fact is that both industries were focused on mass production. Each wants to create the newest product they can and do it in the least amount of time. Even though the products have changed, the concept behind creating those products remain the same. Another similiarity is the problem of polution. During the Industrial Revolution, the polution took more of a local community effect. The pollution mainly effected the packed cities. Today, pollution takes more of a global effect. People are more worried of how pollution will effect the world later on and also concerned with the concept of global warning.

My footprint is higher than average in the areas of Food, Good, and services. This is because I enjoy eating at restraunts and don’t eat at my house a whole lot. I also like to buy things and spend money. I’m going to try to cut back on spending and eating at restraunts as much and instead eat at home and not always go out to the stores and buy new things.
